The Runaways

When I first saw pictures of Kristen Stewart running down a street, dressed head to toe in leather, her glossy brown 'Bella' locks replaced with a jet black mullet-esque style, I was somewhat shocked. But it me amused nonetheless! What could she be working on? The proof was right there in the photos, in the shape of Joan Jett. Stewart was portraying Jett in The Runaways, a biographical film about the 1970s all girl rock band of the same name. To add to my interest, not longer after I saw the Stewart photos, some stills of Dakota Fanning appeared online, dressed in a denim jumpsuit! When the film had finally been made and the trailer was released, with Fanning as Cherie Currie in stockings and 'that' corset, blasting out Cherrybomb, I decided right then and there that I would love this film.

Of course I knew of Joan Jett, and of her music, but I admit that The Runaways eluded me; I didn't really know much about them at all, which doesn't really matter as that is the point in the film, to show people where it all started for Jett and how The Runaways made waves in the music industry. The screenplay was based on Currie's book, Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway. Therefore the film depicts the formation of the band and focuses on the relationship between Jett and Currie, until the latter's departure from the band.

What I like about The Runaways is that it has a steady pace, and it has a lot to say without being too in-your-face; it is compulsive viewing which I love, sort of like a Sofia Coppola film. It is also interesting to watch just for the 70s fashion! I love Stewart and Fanning, and in this film Stewart has the perfect role. Her portrayal of Jett is spot on, as she is shy and awkward but still has that magnetic personality that makes you just want to watch her. But as good as she is, this film is definitely Fanning's film. It's quite a shock to see an actress who the world has seen as a cute child actor, take on such a daring role as this one. Fanning starts off as a young naive girl, who gets whipped up into the world of sex, drugs and rock and roll, and then spirals out of control as the lead singer of The Runaways.

The Curve of Forgotten Things ♥

Elle Fanning is definitely becoming one of my favorite rising starlets! She is the little sister of Dakota Fanning, whom I also adore, an up-and-coming actress, and has already started to turn heads within the fashion industry as Rodarte's latest muse. All this at only 12 years old!

The Curve of forgotten Things is a short film showcasing Rodarte's Spring 2011 collection, directed by Todd Cole with music by Deerhunter. Elle's performance is playful and curious, set in a mysterious house that I think gives off a bit of a 70's vibe (which is on trend at the moment). The whole film is softly lit and has a somewhat mysterious atmosphere, which sets off the clothes beautifully. Overall, I think that it is a lovely way to conceptualise and bring to life a fashion collection, and it is definitely worth a watch if you are interested in arty/indie films

In a Galaxy far, far away... the fashion is amazing ♥

You didn't think I would forget to mention Natalie Portman in Star Wars did you? Well the truth is I have been a massive Star Wars fan ever since I was little... I say I was a massive fan, more like I was seriously obsessed and thought that I was Princess Leia *blushes*. So you can imagine when The Phantom Menace was released and stills of Natalie in her iconic red Queen Amidala costume were all over the internet, I was just in awe. I already loved her from seeing her in Léon (yes I was allowed to watch it at a young age as my Dad was pretty cool when it came to letting me watch films he thought were artistic and from which I could learn from, even though they may have been a little violent) so seeing her in the new Star Wars trilogy was just something I was really ecstatic about! I have always been quite an escapist and I have quite an imagination so I have always been drawn to films that have amazing sets and that are in their own little worlds; I just love to be drawn into something that is so far away from daily life (please excuse the pun). I have always been fixated by amazing costumes, it's one thing that can really get my vote when it comes to a film. I hope to one day to work in the fashion industry myself, so costumes are one thing that I am constantly aware of. Which brings me to the reason for this post, which is mainly a visual one celebrating the absolutely stunning and beautiful costumes Natalie wears as her character, Padmé Amidala, throughout Star Wars I, II and III

Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace

In this picture Natalie is actually on the right, and the Queen is a decoy, played by none other than Keira Knightley ♥

Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones

I think this photo was actually used as a Vogue cover ♥

I love how throughout the second film Natalie's costumes start to head more into the direction of 'Princess Leia' style; like mother like daughter ♥

Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith

*ahem* a sneaky picture of Ewan McGregor managed to make its way in here ♥

So beautiful, this costume was inspired by Millais Ophelia painting ♥
